The Emperor's New Clothes
Piercing a Fog of Lies
October 1999
"Next the statesmen will invent cheap lies, putting the blame upon the nation that is attacked, and every man will be glad of those conscience-soothing falsities, and will diligently study them, and refuse to examine any refutations of them; and thus he will by and by convince himself that the war is just, and will thank God for the better sleep he enjoys after this process of grotesque self-deception."
--- Mark Twain, The Mysterious Stranger, 1916, Ch.9

What's wrong with this picture?

Articles on this Website argue that Western news stories describe a world of their own creation. In this improved reality the massive bombing of Yugoslavia was humanitarian, the victims of that bombing are terrorists and the KLA, having expelled most non-Albanians from Kosovo, is NATO's partner in building a multiethnic society in Kosovo.Artistic creation is never painless; something must be sacrificed, in this case facts. One example: in WWII the Nazi's boosted the same forces in Yugoslavia (Albanian and Croatian racist/nationalists and Bosnian Islamic Fundamentalists) that the US and Germany are backing today. This fact has been removed for cosmetic reasons.
But even the best artists make mistakes and our media is no exception. Can you find the blemish in the following?
Heavy Debt Erodes United Germany's Prosperity, Power
By William Drozdiak (excerpt)"As a regional power that, in Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer's words, "prefers to lead from the second row," Germany has made impressive gains toward shedding past inhibitions while facing up to historical responsibilities. In Kosovo, it dispatched peacekeeping troops beyond its borders for the first time since the Nazi era.'' (Washington Post, 10/3/99)
The Shame of NATO
(posted 10-18-99)
"What do they care for poor Serbs? They think we're stupid farmers and no one needs us. Our expulsion is the shame of the US, Britain, France, Germany and all the big powers. Nationality, race and religion are not what's important. We're all human beings; we have the right to live. A true human being is the one who is ready to help the victim in need. Its high time that we behave like human beings."
Thus spoke a 'stupid' Serbian refugee, one of several members of farming families, driven from Kosovo by the KLA.Maybe we ought to dump the current crew in Washingon and replace them with these guys. If they'd take the job... The Shame of NATO.

Milo Djukanovic is President of Montenegro.
In this official capacity he is admired much by Robert Gelbard, President Clinton's former Envoy to the Balkans:
"Serb opposition leaders really look up to President Djukanovic, not just because he's 6'5 but because he is somebody who clearly demonstrated an ability to construct a democratic coalition that pursues free-market economic policies. So we certainly hope this can be a kind of example.... What Montenegro needs now is support from their European neighbors in concrete terms." (Robert Gelbard, testifying at Senate Hearings on "Prospects for Democratization in Yugoslavia")
Some Italians have risen to the challenge. Reliable sources report that Djukanovic is receiving aid to the tune of 24,000,000 German marks a year from a public-spirited non-governmental organization in Italy. Its name? The Mafia. Read about it in:

Justin Raimondo is philosophically a libertarian and one of the founders and the editor of anti-war.com which posts a wide range of news and analysis to inform antiwar activists. Greg Elich is philosophically a socialist and antiwar activist and recently visited war-devastated Yugoslavia, where he interviewed a wide range of people driven from Kosovo by the KLA. These men have strong views and many disagreements with each other, but both agree: the US government is attacking democracy in Yugoslavia.

In this article we learn that ethnic Egyptians too have been driven from Kosovo by the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA). And Kosovo bigshot Tom Kenigs, pal of German Foreign Minister Jozef Fischer, is worried about his future...

"Independent Kosovo? What independent Kosovo?" George Szamuely's biting critique of our leaders' Kosovo stand. Or stands.
Pope Pius XII -
Friend of Fascism?
(posted 10-9-99)
According to the official story, Eugenio Pacelli, that is Pope Pius XII, opposed the Nazi Death Camps but was powerless to act. Others have charged he shared the guilt not only for the World War II slaughter of Serbs, Jews and Gypsies in Clerico-Fascist Croatia, but for Hitler's campaign to exterminate the Jews all over Europe. John Cornwall set out to write a defence of Pius XII and was given access to secret documents, and there his problem began...Democratic, independent, & free
An uncomfortably close look at the ties that bind: the US government, the Serbian opposition and millions of bucks. In three parts:
*1* the horse's mouth
Note from Jared Israel (9-7-99): I am working on an analysis of the US Senate hearings on "Prospects for Democracy in Yugoslavia." Meanwhile here is the transcript. It is well worth reading the whole thing; it's really quite revealing, especially the half-finished sentences...
